:: Sam Mayfield ::
I have been active in Burlington’s community media world since 2004. I made my first documentary video using resources from our local government access television station, Ch.17. Community media is very close to my heart. Free speech, open networks and access to independent media are at the very core of what motivates me in my daily life and work. In 2008 I was very active in the local struggle of keeping Al Jazeera English alive on the airwaves at Burlington Telecom.
As a documentarian and video journalist I produce media that is reflective of my immediate environment and that sheds light in the dark places where mainstream corporate media does not venture. I believe that in order to have a more just world we need to produce our own media or have a direct relationship with the media outlets that serve us.
I’d like to serve on the VCAM board of directors because I believe that we need to continue to build, strengthen and nurture Burlington’s independent and alternative media spirit. I work well in groups, I have vision, I am a critical thinker and I am a very good listener.
