Some vlogging tools

What's vlogging, you ask? It's like blogging (in fact, it is blogging) except your post contains video instead of, or along with, text and photos. A great example of a vlog is Chuck Olsen's excellent Minnesota Stories--a five-days-a-week video blog all about life in Minnesota.

At SXSWi I had the opportunity to meet a bunch of vloggers and I came away armed with some helpful online tools to help people start syndicating their own content on the web. VCAM has all of the hardware and software you will need to do this, you just have to spend the time and energy to make it happen.

First off, some definitions:

  • Blog

  • Podcast

  • Vlog

  • Vodcast

  • RSS feed

  • Now, some places to go to help you start vlogging:

  • Freevlog.org: This should be your first stop. They walk you through everything step-by-step, from creating a blog to compressing, uploading and publishing your videos.

  • OurMedia.org: This is a good place to go to host your videos for free (using the Internet Archive).

  • Feedburner: Step-by-step instructions help you create and publish your feed so people can subscribe to your videos.

  • FireAnt.tv: This is a good place to post your feed and advertise yourself so others can see your videos online.

  • There's also a very active Yahoo video blogging group with tons of good info and a bunch of experts ready to answer your questions. Go here to join.

What are you waiting for? Go forth and vlog! And make sure you let us know when you do so we can link to your vlog here.
