The Band of Friends is a Boston based group of musicians that have been creating music together ever since they started studying at the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory. The band features original music rooted in bluegrass and fiddle traditions as well as drawing from inspirations from around the world. Whether they are celebrating a melody or soaring high on improvisational creations, The Band of Friends offers a fresh new perspective on string band music. Guitarist Sam Leslie is the RockyGrass 2017 Flat-Pick Guitar and 2018 Mandolin Champion. Ethan Setiawan on mandolin has won such accolades as the National Mandolin Championship and the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship. Dan Klingsberg on bass is well versed in jazz and classical bass but has found a deep passion for old time fiddle music. Julian Pinelli is a free-spirited violinist who spins deep tone with modern ease. ​ Built on longtime friendship and frequent collaboration, the Band of Friends is comprised of Sam Leslie, guitar ​Sam Leslie grew up in a musical family in Evergreen, Colorado and now lives in Boston. Sam is studying Performance and Sound Engineering at the Berklee College of Music. Having an affinity for acoustic music, he also plays mandolin, bass, fiddle, and other various things with strings. Sam is the RockyGrass 2017 Flat-pick Guitar and 2018 Mandolin Champion. Ethan Setiawan, mandolin Ethan Setiawan originally from Goshen, Indiana is a Boston-based mandolin player who’s won such accolades as the National Mandolin Championship, the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship, and a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music. His path has wound its way through traditional bluegrass to Bach partitas to free jazz, and his debut full-length album is made up of original tunes drawing from all these wells. Dan Klingsberg, bass Dan is from Arlington, Massachusetts and now studies at the New England Conservatory. He is well versed in jazz and classical bass but has found a deep passion for old time fiddle music. Dan draws from the depths of all of these musical worlds to create a distinctive sound that is at home in any musical setting. Julian Pinelli, fiddle Sprung from the music of southern Appalachia, Julian is a free-spirited violinist who spins deep tone with modern ease. Julian spent his childhood surrounded by many iconic acoustic musicians in Asheville NC including fiddler Bobby Hicks – whose smooth and lush sound has had a big impact on Julian’s playing. Now residing in Boston and a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, Julian is the recipient of the 2016 Fresh Grass Fiddle Award and winner of the 2017 RockyGrass fiddle competition.
