This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel is devoted largely to the airing of a video documentary by Richard Belfield entitled The Day Israel Attacked America. This powerful film deconstructs the attack on a non-belligerent U.S. naval vessel, The USS Liberty, on June 8, 1967, by Israeli jets and torpedo boats. Thirty-four sailors and Marines were killed, 171 were injured, and the ship was extensively damaged by rockets, torpedoes, armor-piercing projectiles, and napalm. Israel's navy even fired on life rafts. The attack, as the film makes clear in interviews with the survivors and through Israeli military audiotapes, was not an accident of war. It was premeditated and intended to keep the Liberty, a spy vessel, from detecting and reporting on the movements and actions of Israel's armed forces during the Six-Day War, notably Israel's invasion of Syria's Golan Heights.

The second half of the film documents the extensive cover-up by the U.S. government, including the White House, the media, and pro-Israel donors and lobbyists to protect Israel from criminal accountability or public condemnation. Frankly, this is most revealing and chilling part of the film.

This edition of the program also includes a brief but shocking video by Israeli soldiers shooting Palestinian protesters and bragging about it. Forty-nine years after the Liberty was attacked and the occupied territories conquered, Israel's armed forces are still using violence, repression, and terror with impunity.
