The centerpiece of this edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel is a speech from 2014 by former Israeli soldier Eran Efrati about his journey from Zionist warrior to peace and anti-occupation activist. This gripping narrative moves from Eran’s childhood—his father is the Jerusalem chief of police and his grandmother a Holocaust survivor—to his military service in Hebron and the West Bank, where his brutal experiences as a soldier of occupation ignited his conscience, to his personal commitment to expose Israeli war crimes in Gaza and his country’s role in the expansion of global militarism.

This program also features short reports on the daily humiliation of the occupation by B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights organization, and on anti-African racism in Israel by Israeli activist David Sheen. Finally, the show opens with a short but provocative look at the complicity of Israel’s military judges in the oppression and abuse of Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s military court system. The latter is excerpted from the tour de force film The Law in These Parts by Israeli filmmaker Ra’anan Alexandrowicz.
