This edition of Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine Israel offers commentary on VTJP’s 3rd Annual Free Cone Day Protests organized at Ben & Jerry scoop shops in the United States. The company, in violation of its social mission, is allowing its franchise in Israel to sell its “peace and love” ice cream in illegal, Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. VTJP has been trying to stop this unethical business since 2013 (see www.vtjp.org/icecream). In honor of this year’s protest actions, we will air our first-ever “cantastoria”—a sung story—about B&J’s commercial complicity with Israel’s settlements and a brilliant piece of satire on the same subject by the video project Apartheid Adventures. The latter is called “Licking Apartheid”. The balance of the program is devoted to a documentary by Ayed Nabaa on Israel’s complete domination of 61% of the land in the West Bank and the exploitation of its natural resources, both in the service of expanding Israeli colonies and ethnically cleansing Palestinians. This film takes its name from the designation conferred on this occupied and colonized section of the West Bank in 1993 during the Oslo negotiations—Area C.
